CWEEL Governing Board – Solicitation for Applications for Open CWEEL board positions 2026-2028 Term

The Governing Board of the Council on Women in Energy & Environmental Leadership (CWEEL) is seeking to fill a CWEEL board position effective January 1, 2026.  Each CWEEL board member is responsible for leading a functional area or program in support of the CWEEL mission.  The CWEEL board positions will be replacing the current board members for the following positions:

  • Fundraising & Sponsorships Committee Chair
  • Chapter Liaison Committee Chair
  • Scholarships & Awards Committee Chair

This is an extraordinary opportunity for women who are passionate about the energy sector, are called to support the success of women in our industry and CWEEL and have a track record of volunteerism and leadership.  CWEEL’s mission is to provide a network for women in the energy and environmental industries. We support career development for professional women, mentoring for young and aspiring women to pursue technical education and careers in the energy and environmental fields, and scholarships on a global level. CWEEL is a division of the nonprofit Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).

CWEEL is governed by a volunteer Governing Board.  The board serves to establish and fulfill the mission and objectives of CWEEL. The board sets policies; provides oversight and management of the organization; and participates in the execution of the strategic plan. CWEEL Board Structure

The CWEEL board members each serve a three-year term.  Each board member chairs a CWEEL committee, and the committee meetings are held as determined by each Committee Chair but no less than quarterly.  Service on CWEEL’s board of directors is voluntary and without remuneration or reimbursement for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to board members’ duties. CWEEL board meetings are held monthly.

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Regularly attend board meetings (minimum 8 of 12 meetings per year) and important meetings related to voting matters
  • Make a commitment to participate actively in committee work – including developing and managing committees
  • Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time
  • Stay informed about committee matters, prepare for meetings, and review and comment on minutes and reports
  • Get to know other committee members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus
  • Actively participant in the committee’s annual evaluation and planning efforts
  • Attend at least one (1) AEE Conference in person annually – AEE East, AEE West, and AEE World

General Board Member Requirements

Leadership Skills:

    • Experience in leading and motivating a committee.
    • Ability to delegate tasks effectively and coordinate efforts toward common objectives.

Commitment to CWEEL’s Mission:

    • Genuine passion for and belief in CWEEL’s mission and goals.
    • Ability to articulate CWEEL’s value proposition to potential supporters.

Problem-Solving Skills:

    • Capacity to identify challenges and develop creative solutions to overcome obstacles in achieving goals.

Collaboration with AEE Staff:

  • Experience in working collaboratively with organization staff, specifically with AEE staff, to ensure smooth program implementation and alignment.

Communication Skills:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effectively conveying CWEEL’s mission and goals and program offerings.
    • Public speaking skills for representing the organization at events and meetings.

 

Fundraising Committee Chair Position Qualifications

The fundraising committee, develops and implements programs, that raise funds for the growth, program implementation, and scholarship offering of the CWEEL organization.   The Chair is responsible for building a committee, and leading and managing a team to implement campaigns and programs and achieve the targeted annual financial goals of the organization.    Fundraising Chair candidates should demonstrate a track record of success in raising funds for non-profits/and or sales, developing multi-level marketing campaigns and programs to generate funds, engaging in outreach, and lead generation of donors.  The ability to network and effectively communicate the CWEEL mission and value proposition will be key to effectively growing the fundraising program and maintaining key long-term donor relationships. The Fundraising committee is also responsible for tracking funds raised, developing the annual CWEEL budget, and providing comparison of budget to actual financial data.

Chapter Liaison Committee Chair Position Qualifications

The Chapter Liaison Committee plays a vital role in bridging the gap between the CWEEL Governing Council and local CWEEL chapters.  Chapter Liaisons are responsible for cross-sharing information and initiatives, ensuring that CWEEL goals, initiatives, and events are communicated effectively at the local level.  The Chapter Liaison Committee Chair is responsible for leading the team of representatives from the AEE Chapter CWEEL groups to further the growth of CWEEL participation, create alignment between the CWEEL groups and Governing Council goals and initiatives, create a dialogue across group representatives to share best practices and ideas, and to develop avenues for developing CWEEL groups within AEE Chapters and other target markets such as higher education institutions.  The Committee Chair is responsible for working with the liaisons to grow membership in the local CWEEL groups, initiating outreach to grow the number of AEE Chapters that have a local CWEEL Chapter, and developing programming that supports CWEEL Chapter growth at the local level.  Candidates for the Chapter Liaison Committee Chair should demonstrate an ability to effectively manage a large team, develop and implement outreach initiatives and strategies to grow the committee, and expand participation in the CWEEL chapters.

  

Scholarships & Awards Committee Chair Qualifications

CWEEL helps fund higher education of female students in STEM studies.  CWEEL provides scholarships  that are distributed through the AEE Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit organization. The Scholarship & Awards Committee is responsible for soliciting and reviewing applications for CWEEL scholarships in accordance with established processes and working closely with the AEE staff to make recommendations for award.  The CWEEL Committee chair is responsible for recruiting and developing the CWEEL Awards & Scholarships committee, providing leadership and strategic planning, and interfacing with other associated committees including the CWEEL fundraising committee to raise funds for scholarships each year.

As a new initiative, we will be focusing on increasing women’s participation in the AEE Awards program and will look to this committee to develop CWEEL’s efforts to achieve this goal. Information about this program can be found here: https://www.aeecenter.org/membership/awards/

In addition, to managing college scholarships, the CWEEL Scholarship & Awards Committee is responsible for cultivating, reviewing, and recommending to the CWEEL Governing Council candidates for the CWEEL Champion awards.  Each year awards are given to one US and one international CWEEL group that shows exemplary support of the CWEEL mission at the local level.  Awards are given to the AEE chapter that is the CWEEL champion and to the CWEEL Chapter Liaison, Chapter Lead, or other local chapter Member that has been the strongest advocate and CWEEL volunteer in that local chapter.Application Process
