New York CWEEL Chapter celebrates women’s history month
On March 30, 2021, the New York CWEEL Group held its inaugural event in celebration of Women’s History Month. It featured NYC Mayoral Candidate and former Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia and NYSERDA SVP Janet Joseph as panelists and was moderated by Rebecca Roberts, a member of the NY Group’s Advisory Board. The engaging session focused on the panelists’ deep experience as leaders in the energy and environment industry. Talking about the environment, Kathryn told attendees that it is “easier to keep it clean than to clean up the mess.” Janet shared that her energy career path was motivated by the need “to focus on solutions.” The panelists offered insights into the rapid growth of the energy industry, which has opportunities for all – engineers, architects, technicians, marketing and communications specialists, lawyers, human resource professionals, and many others. In discussing how to motivate teams as a leader, Janet shared that people are willing to follow a strong vision, while Kathryn encouraged attendees to focus on the end result, the major problem to be solved. Both provided insights into their personal experiences as female leaders in a male-dominated industry. Janet left the attendees with the powerful take away – “if you’re in the room, you belong in the room.”
