Mariana Egea Casalduc, Jenny Wiedower, and Sydney Applegate

Mariana Egea-Casalduc is an ORISE Science, Technology, and Policy Fellow with the Department of Energy in the Building Technologies Office (BTO), and serves as the Healthcare Sector Lead within the Better Buildings Initiative. Mariana received her bachelor of arts degree in international relations from American University in 2019.Before coming to BTO, Mariana was an associate at a DC-based global investment management firm.

As an ORISE Fellow with the U.S. Dept of Energy, Jenny supports initiatives to prepare students and professionals for competitive, meaningful and impactful jobs in the clean economy sector. Previously, Jenny led the U.S. Green Building Council’s efforts to support teaching and learning as a key component of any green school. Her work to convene stakeholders, deliver tools and advance public awareness around sustainability concepts in a school’s educational program is driven by a vision where all students have the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future and pursue a green career. As Senior Manager, K-12 Education, she directed strategy, development and delivery of USGBC’s K-12 education offerings, including the Learning Lab online education platform and the Green Classroom Professional Certificate program; as well as development of mentorship and career connection opportunities to support green career pathways for students. 

Sydney Applegate (They/She) is an ORISE Science Technology and Policy Fellow in the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office (BTO). Sydney leads the Efficient and Healthy Schools Program and the Building Energy Data and Tools Portfolio. They are also assisting Andrea Falken at the US Department of Education to support the US Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Program. They previously worked at ICF where they supported the data analytics team for DOE’s Better Buildings and Better Climate Initiatives. Sydney also supported EPA’s ENERGY STAR commercial building program and EPA’s Portfolio Manager. They also have a background in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Virginia. Sydney lives in Colorado and works out of the Golden Field Office at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) campus.
